Begin thinking about Major Project #1. The theme this quarter is 'dreams'.
Monday, October 23
Due Today: none
Learning Target: W.11-12.3.B Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, pacing, description, reflection, and multiple plot lines, to develop experiences, events, and/or characters. RL.11-12.5 Analyze how an author's choices concerning how to structure specific parts of a text.
Classwork
  1. Do Now: Create a page after your last entry labelled Quarter 2: Dreams. Draw a single image of what you think of when you hear the term 'fairy tale.'
  2. After: Read the Grimm fairy tale entitled The White Snake and evaluate after reading/listening.
      • Does it have a 'once upon a time' or 'long, long ago' feel?
      • Does it deal with good vs. evil?
      • Is there a decision that is/needs to be made?
      • What is the conflict?
      • Is there significance placed on the number 3 or 7?
      • Are there repeated phrases or structures?
      • Is there some form of magic or magical element?
      • Does the story resolve at the end?
  3. Then: Begin your own fairy tale in the style of The White Snake
  4. During:  Editors finish drafts of the Quarter 1 magazine for group review.
Target Practice: I can draft my own fairy tale in the style of The White Snake. Fist-5?
Homework
  • Finish drafting your fairy tale in the style of The White Snake by next class.
  • Begin dream journal. For the class, you are expected to keep a dream journal for 5 consecutive days. This will not be assessed until the last week of the quarter. So, you have time. Feel free to do more if you feel it is a valuable activity! The dream journal must include:
      1. Day, Date, and Time (morning, night, nap...specific time is not required)
      2. Description: focus on sensory details, not analysis
      3. Analysis: write a sentence or two about what you think the dream was about
      4. Reflection: write a sentence or two about what you think precipitated the dream, why you might dream something like this, or what larger meaning it might have.

Due Today: Fairy Tale
Learning Target: W.11-12.10 Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences. W.11-12.5 Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach. L.11-12.3 Apply knowledge of language to understand how language functions in different contexts, to make effective choices for meaning or style.
  1. Do Now: In your journal reflect on the Japanese ideal of Komorebi (literally, the way sunlight dances between leaves, limbs, and trunks of trees in the forest). Use the entire time provided to WRITE!
  2. After: Revise fairy tale with any ideas gleaned from today's 'Do Now' (hint: the link will take you to a poem for inspiration).
  3. Then: Fairy tale checklist...need to say 'yes' to all of these!
      • Does it have a 'once upon a time' or 'long, long ago' feel?
      • Does it deal with good vs. evil?
      • Is there a decision that is/needs to be made?
      • What is the conflict?
      • Is there significance placed on the number 3 or 7?
      • Are there repeated phrases or structures?
